Sometimes people need things explained to them in their own terms, think about when you try and teach a child how to tie their shoes, everyone remembers the "bunny ears" method, and it works because children will associate the method with something they're already interested in, bunnies. Matt Wilson at the Huffington Post had the right idea when he wrote about the LA Lakers and how they can help teach you about running a successful small business. Still riding on the success of their win over the Boston Celtics last week the Lakers celebrated their victory today by taking a ride down Figueroa in Downtown Los Angeles, just a few blocks from our Incorporate Fast offices, but the success didn't come easy, as with anything worth waiting for. Matt writes about the focus, the changes and making things happen among others in his post, it's a great read and a lot will definitely find it useful.

Welcome to another addition of our small business tips. When you start out a business you have an idea of all you're going to spend on, it's important to not spend on what is not needed when you're opening a small business, for example, it's common for small business owners to outsource when it's really not necessary. You don't need a fancy PR firm when you first start, most advertising should be done word of mouth, when you launch a major advertising campaign it's something that needs to be around for a while in order to make an impact on your sales, and most start ups do not have that kind of funding. It's important to utilize free services such as Twitter and Facebook, another important part of marketing without breaking your budget is to have a website built. An online presence is necessary in this day in age, and we've written about it before, but it's just something that should not be cut back on while trying to start your business.
The main thing is to not go overboard, have a budget and stick to it, cut back on things you don't need. If you have any business questions, or are interested in a starting an LLC or corporation give us a call.

Choosing a business name is usually a pretty complicated process, a lot of people will jot down some names and get opinions from their friends and family about the names they've jotted down. Usually people have a good idea of what they want for a business name, but sometimes when nothing's coming to mind they choose something that's very generic and describes what their business does, this might be good for certain types of businesses, but most times generic names are cannot be incorporated or formed as an LLC because there are probably countless similar names on file with your state with that same name. We suggest using a somewhat unique name or avoid acronyms. States will not recognize periods, ampersands or hyphens, therefore AB&C Group, Inc is the same name as A.B.C. Group Inc. Also Corporation, Inc, Incorporated, Inc. are all the same in the eyes of the state, as are LLC, L.L.C. and Limited Liability Company.
If you need help in deciding if a name appears to be available at the state, whether that be for an LLC or a corporation please give us a call, we can be reached Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm Pacific Standard time at 866-999-8200.

Social media is an important tool these days. Many small businesses are quick to sign up for Facebook and Twitter but there's no sense in establishing accounts if you're not going to be active in the communities. If you don't have time to update these pages there are also several services that can link pages such as Facebook and Twitter together. It's important to stay active in the community because, even if this is just a trend, it's how consumers are staying in contact with their favorite companies and it's also how companies can spread the word about promotions and get their name out there. There is also a flip side, and sometimes companies spend too much time and energy on social networking sites, so it's important to find a balance and have realistic views on what the social networking will do for your company, like any other online marketing tool, it takes time to see results, but at the minimum you will be able to interact with your clients and see what they're saying about your company, some may even have suggestions on how to make your product or service better.

When you start a business you'll have a lot of people telling you what to do and what not to do, it's important to realize where this advise is coming from, if the person telling you not to start the business, because most small businesses fail, has never tried to start a business, who are they to tell you what you should or shouldn't do? The main thing is to focus on what you set out to do and try not to steer far from that goal. A lot of people will also tell you not to worry about anything and everything will work out, while you shouldn't kill yourself by overworking, part of owning your own business is worrying about things, that's what makes it yours, and when you're focusing on the right areas of the business your business should succeed.
If you're looking to start a new business, whether that be a corporation, limited liability company or file for a DBA, we can help.

When you're starting a business with someone it's important to know that your partner or partners are just as passionate about making the business work as you are. If one person is less thrilled about the business than others, chances are that they're not going to put as much effort into the business as you or others, this can cause conflict in the business. When you're choosing partners to go into business with it's important to not push the idea of the business to anyone and make them feel pressured into joining your venture. Sometimes friends or family members may convince someone to join their business without thought of the outcome, not only strained business relationships but possibly strained personal relationships too. A good tip is if someone is interested in the business but not interested in running the business ask them if they can invest as a silent partner, this gives you the freedom to run the business yet it establishes that you will be doing the work. Whenever starting a business, whether it be a corporation or an LLC or even just a partnership, it's important to have roles delegated so that everyone in the business knows what they are responsible for.
